To Chatter or Not to Chatter

Times in the online world and the IM world have changed. In the past, when doing business dealings or communicating with clients, possible partners, and even the people who leave you comments, it was common place to be very professional and business like.

Now days, the common advice is to be more friendly and personable. That’s all fine and dandy. I like that. But, I know me and sometimes I chatter too much. Of course there are times that I rarely chatter. And talking to me in person, you might think I didn’t have much to say. However, put my fingers on a keyboard and I can be a chatterbox.

I guess that’s a little misleading when people want to chat with me on Skype. They probably expect someone who is about to jump out of their skin and talks 90 to nothing. I’m really not like that. I’m content to sit and listen to others talk, but like I said, give me a keyboard or a chat box and away I go.

I have a lot of chatter in my head. I keep intending to use all of that chatter as blog posts, but never seem to get around to doing it. I’ve learned that people like informative posts, they want to learn from you. They also enjoy reading a good yak now and then, especially if it’s humorous or controversial, or even both depending on how you deliver your controversial message.

So what’s your blogging personality? Do you like to chatter once in awhile and post something totally unrelated to your niche? Share a bit of yourself on occasion?

What’s been your experience with doing this? Which types of post seem to get the most attention and the most response? I’d love to hear your thoughts so just leave a comment.

Have a great day!
Patti

New Look!

You’re in the right place. I tried a more streamlined look and it just isn’t me. I like stuff that’s a bit more cozy. Don’t know how long I’ll stay with this one.

Would love to hear your thoughts. Do you like the new look or not?

Thanks,
Patti

Week 1 Challenge

If you missed the 365 Day Challenge that I’m doing this year, you can click that link to find out about it. It’s #3 on the list.

My first week wasn’t that productive, but I didn’t expect it to be, as things happen the first week.

However, I did change some of the plans I listed here. They are basically still the same, as far as this blog goes, but I’ve added some other focus areas to my overall plan.

I also read Nicole Dean’s post on not doing any resolutions. Instead, people are choosing one to three words that describe how they want their year to be. It’s like a mantra, a focus word. I ended up with 7. Yikes! I need to narrow those down to 3. I just don’t know which ones it’ll be as they all fit some area of my life and are things I need to concentrate on.

I don’t want to draw them from a hat either. They need to “pick” me. The three that did strike me the most were wealth, abundance and gratitude. Neither of those necessarily equal money either. Don’t get me wrong, I want to make boat loads of money, but that’s not the reason I want to do the things I do. If I don’t feel good about them and if I can’t help others find direction or feel good about themselves, then no amount of money will ever fulfill that desire.

Three other words that struck me were action, discipline and mastery. All of those need daily attention from me. So you can see why it’s a bit hard to choose 3. Maybe this method wasn’t ready for me. The final word is compassion, which is something that almost all people need to work on. Even if you rock the compassion world, you can always do more.

Maybe in my next post I’ll have my words narrowed down, or I’ll just choose my own special word. One thing I still need to do is break my big list down into weekly action steps. I plan to work on that this weekend.

On Sunday we take my daughter back to college. The trip always wears me out, so that day won’t include much work or planning, but I get my living room back. :)

Enough about me. How was your first week of the New Year? Leave your thoughts and all in the comment section.

Hugs!
Patti

You Have Nothing to Lose

Okay, I have a lot of stuff to share in this post, but it all ties in together.

As the year comes to an end I see many people making plans and ready to go boldly into the future. I also see a number of people who are still afraid or who expect different results but continue to do the same old things. And there’s also those that simply let life happen to them.

Now there is nothing wrong with any of that, but if you want something better…do something about it! If you keep doing the same things you are now, you’ll keep getting the same results. If you’re getting good results, then by all means, keep it up. But if you’d like to change your results, change what you’re doing.

Let’s say you keep painting a wall green, but you really want a blue wall. As long as you keep painting it green, it’ll be green. You can’t change the color of that wall until you go buy a different color of paint and use it.

Many people are worried about the economy. Well, the only thing wrong with the economy is what “they” want you to think is wrong with it. I don’t watch the news, I don’t buy into that bullshit or hype and my economy is no worse off than it was a year ago—it’s actually better and I have a story for that.

At this time last year, Kevin and I were in a very scary and dark situation. We followed a “too good to be true deal” and it flopped. We knew we had to move from the place we had ended up and try to get back to Branson. However, we didn’t have the money. All we knew at that time was that we could afford a storage building to store all of our belongings in and we could live in our car if we had too. We accepted that realization and it lifted the world off our shoulders. We thought of the worst possible outcome, which was living in a car, and we decided it wouldn’t be that bad.
If this was our path, if this was an experience we were supposed to have in life, then so be it. So what?

So what if we don’t have a house or an apartment? So what if we live in our car? We’d be together through it and our stuff would be just fine in storage.

Most people would worry about how they can do this or that, like take a bath or do laundry. You know what? There are truck stops all over the US where you can pay to take a shower. This isn’t a problem. There are laundry facilities all over the US where you can do your laundry. This isn’t a problem. Many stores have a deli now so you can go and buy a hot meal, usually cheaper or as cheap as fast food.

A can of Vienna sausages and a box of crackers is less than $2. It may not be the greatest meal in the world, but it will sustain life for awhile.

Once you put those things into perspective and accept that it’s not as bad as it sounds, your whole life changes. It’s really not as bad as it sounds. No, we didn’t have to live in our car, but we decided we’d make the best of it if we had to. It’s about perspective.
Would it be easy? Hell no, but it’s very doable.

Failure is not the worst thing that can happen to you. You can choose to fail forward. You only truly fail if you stop trying.

When I feel like giving up, I watch this video. It changes your whole outlook.
Finish Strong:

Suppose you have to live in your car. Is that really the worse thing that could happen to you? No, it’s not. If you will look around, you will find that some of the richest people in the US were homeless at one time in their life. People like Joe Vitale and Dani Johnson. Did they let that stop them from going for their dreams? Apparently not, they both live in nice homes now and are able to give to charity and help others.

Maybe you think you aren’t like those people, you can’t do it. They must have something you don’t. Well the truth is, the only thing they now have that you don’t is extra money. They are no different than you, they just found their drive, their will and their why.

Lynn Terry recently shared her thoughts on it in this video. I was also mentioned in it because I had shared some of my thoughts on one of her websites. (Yes, shameless plug!)

Rags to Riches:

So, what do YOU have to lose? Your house? It’s just a house. Maybe it has sentimental value to you, but it’s just a house. Home is what’s in your heart and you carry that with you everywhere you go. At least you should.

Your stuff? Surely you can afford $50 per month to store your things until you get on your feet and find another house. Borrow it if you have to.

What if you have medical conditions? You figure out a way to make it work. And I am not implying that it’s easy. But when things are bad, you find a way to make them better! Whatever it takes, right?

If you continue to accept that life just happens and you continue to believe the “perceptions” that other people have tried to pound into your head, you’re going to keep getting the same shit! And yes, it is shit. Create your own perception, create your own success. Stop waiting for something to come along that will change it. It won’t come along until YOU make it come along.

You have nothing to lose by trying! You have everything to lose by not trying. It’s your choice. Choose to try or choose to do nothing. It’s that simple. It may not be easy, but it is that simple.

Growing Big Balls!

I recently posted my plans for 2012. I will focus on a few key things but one of my major goals that I didn’t cover was doing Internet Marketing. Many gurus tell you that it’s the “hardest” niche to get into. It’s not that it’s hard, but it is huge and you do start off as a little fish in a gigantic ocean. That would normally terrify me because I don’t feel I have the “knowledge” to step off into this big bad world. However, I have learned in life that you learn by doing. You can have a lot of knowledge in theory, but until you put it into practice, it’s all just theory.

Another biggie on my list is to become a super affiliate. Until recently I hadn’t thought much about that. I love affiliate marketing. I love sharing products that I find valuable and useful. However, I don’t really promote products as much as I promote the people behind them. I have to like the person before I recommend their product. I do want to be one of the top promoters for great products. I also want to promote physical products as well. We all use stuff in our homes and most of it can be purchased online. If there’s an affiliate program, you might as well use it. Right?

One of the key things for me is to ask myself if I’d promote it for free. If I have to stop and think about the answer, then I don’t promote it.

Another key for me is trying to avoid upsells. I’m not fond of them and I rarely follow any marketer that does this. In the past this has always been a cheesy tactic to me, but I’m starting to find a few who use upsells, but they aren’t sleazy. I’ll save my thoughts on that for another post.

Anyway, growing big balls, stepping out of the comfort zone, making connections and finally getting down to business. I have all of this theory in my head. I have a hard drive full of info-products and courses that contain all the theory I should ever need. It’s time to put it into practice. That’s the goal for 2012.

I’ve decided that I’m not willing to just let life happen to me any more. Life IS what you make it and I believe you can create any life you want. You just have to get off your ass and your excuses and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

2012, for me, is about stepping out of those excuses and comfort zones and going boldly into the future.

What is your goal for 2012? Are you going to dig in and get serious with your business? Are you finally going to become an expert in your niche and be the go-to person for answers? Are you finally going to bust out of the low pay freelance rut and grab some big clients for your writing business?

Whatever business you’re in, I’d love to hear what YOU have planned for the new year.

To your success!
Patti

Direction, Focus, 2012, Make it Happen

The new year is almost here. I’ve spent the past week or two getting plans ready, deciding on my direction and where I want to go with everything.

Tiffany Dow has issued a challenge in the Warrior Forum that I’ve joined. Several people have signed up and one of the main points across the board is to really get focused. It’s top of my list too and why I’ll be blogging and sharing more with my readers.

One of the first things I’m doing is going through Darren Rowse’s 31 Days to a Better Blog program. I haven’t started implementing much of it, but I will at the first of the year. Actually, I guess I am implementing since I’m writing this post. Go me!

I’m also taking a year long coaching program. I’m not ready to say what it is yet. I want to follow it a little more and decide if I like the style of the presenters.

Here is a bit of what I posted for the 365 Day Challenge:

Projects:
PLR Store
Newsletter
Blog
Possibly affiliate sites for boredom and amusement.

Focus:
list building
traffic
recommendations
making connections

Daily/Weekly:
write 1 page of plr
write 1 page of content
put together all the products/reports I already have

Other Areas:

Courses and Workshops – I’ve gained access for some workshops and stuff that I will be sharing if I think they’re good. I did not create them, but I do have rights to some of them or I will share a link to the ones I’m taking.

Monthly Themes – Each month I will focus on an aspect of business building and share my thoughts and findings.

  • January – List Building & Traffic
  • February – Affiliate Marketing
  • March – SEO
  • April – Copywriting
  • May – Article Marketing
  • June – Writing Reviews and six month recap
  • July – (possibly revisit affiliate marketing)
  • August – (possibly revisit list building)
  • Sept. – Dec. – Still open

That’s pretty much the jist of my plan. I’m still putting it all together and need to work out daily and monthly action tasks, line out topics, and other stuff along those lines.

Let’s make 2012 a kick ass year and finally get focused and start creating our own success stories.

Are you with me? I’d love to hear your plans for the upcoming year. Just leave a comment in the section below.

To your success!
Patti

I’m a Do Follow Blog

Do you understand that terminology? People often look for a do follow blog to leave comments on. They do this because it gives them a back link to their site.

My blog is do follow. I love comments. In fact, if you comment on my blog, I have CommentLuv installed. This allows my readers to see the title of the last post from your own blog. However, I actually allow you to choose which of your last 10 blog posts you’d like to link to.

Cool huh?

I also have a Page Rank of 4 – which you can see in the sidebar or go to a PR checker and look for yourself. The Page Rank thing isn’t always available or acting right, but I do have a PR rating.

Why is any of this important? Because I love comments and I give you an incentive to comment more and get a link back to your stuff and you can add your Twitter ID too.

With all that said, the first few times you comment it will be moderated. I don’t allow spam comments–who does? But if you have something relevant to say and share—I WANT to hear from you.

I don’t care if you’re in the writing niche, marketing niche, health niche—it doesn’t matter to me, as long as your comment is real and you’re real.

So, if you’ve been looking for a do follow blog to comment on—-leave me a comment!

To your success!

Let’s Get Comfy. Or Not.

How comfortable are you? Do you stay all cozy and warm in your comfort zone? Are you afraid to push your comfort zone? As Lena said in a recent edition of the Acorn Stash, it can be UNcomfortable. She also mentioned that we’ve been conditioned to like our comfort zone. Why would we ever want to leave it?

Well, if you never leave the comfort zone you’ve created for yourself, you start to stagnate. You hinder the growth of yourself, not only mentally but spiritually too. Christ sent his disciples out with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and shoes on their feet. They stepped WAY out of a comfort zone, but it forced them to grow.

No one is asking you (or me) to step that far out of the zone we’ve grown accustomed to. However, if we never “expand” that zone it can stifle us, stifle our creativity, and almost suffocate us. How comfortable is the comfort zone when it begins to feel like a cage? When the barrier seems too wide or the wall too high to scale easily?

“Most people tiptoe through life, hoping to make it safely to death.” ~ Earl Nightingale

Sharon Michael’s offers an ebook titled, “Is Your Comfort Zone Too Comfortable.” I know I ordered and read it (and want to read it again) but I can’t seem to find it on either computer. I guess it’ll show up after I don’t need it to reference some things.

You can also read her blog at Power to Succeed. She has some great articles and advice.

“If you add a little to a little, and then do it again, soon that little shall be much.” ~Hesiod

It is scary to get out of your comfort zone, but it can be just as scary if you never get out of it. When your comfort zone becomes too comfortable it’s more like a prison.

If it’s too hard to push your comfort zone to the max, then just try expanding it a little bit at a time. You’ll soon discover that your comfort zone is bigger than you thought. What was once painful and scary, now becomes easy and feels natural.

Another great example is Alice Seba. She has done video, but it’s not something she does very often. This month, she’s sort of challenged herself to get out of that comfort zone.

Tips to Expand Your Comfort Zone:

  • If you’ve been in lurk mode, start commenting on blogs.
  • Join some challenges–whether it’s a blog challenge, branding challenge, writing challenge.
  • Do something to help push your comfort zone just a little bit. You’ll be glad you did.

“One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.” ~ Henry Ford

What are YOU doing to step out of your comfort zone?

Busy Week, Dragon Review, a Great Mention, and Aug 10K Day

So, it’s been a busy week. I finally received my Dragon software. This is my third dictation and so far it’s going pretty well. Of course, it will take more training and I will have to get used to talking to myself, but I think it will be a big timesaver. I do a lot of handwriting and I hate typing from copy, so this will make it a lot faster to transcribe the material that I handwrite.

This software was recommended to me by trusted source. I finally decided to make the purchase and I think it will be very helpful. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to save time or possibly has problems with their wrists or hands when typing. You still have to do some edits, unless you tell software to use certain punctuation. However, you can vocally tell it to select certain words and correct them using your voice. It’s really easy.

One thing I’d like to point out is that you have to train yourself as well as the software. The more you work with it, the easier it gets and the more accurate it becomes. It does have some problems with some of my pronunciations but I believe that’s from having a partial plate. It generally doesn’t bother me, but in certain speaking situations I become painfully aware of how I pronounce certain words. It’s just something I will have to work out. I’m sure it will learn those little quirks about me.

In other news, I’ve been working on some new PLR packs and have a new pack ready about building your own business.

I’ve been doing some PLR challenges and for the July challenge I won the grand prize. It entitles me to $100 free content. How cool!

David Walker of David Walker.tv recently released his new product titled Big Money Backlinks. On page 19, David added a screenshot of a conversation that he and I had at Blogging Tips on my article about setting intentions. This is a very good mention for me because he is fast becoming one of the top marketers in the industry. It pays to reply to comments that people leave you. It not only gives you recognition but it can also build friendships.

Other than training my new Dragon software today I think I will take it easy. I did work on my day off and got quite a few things accomplished, and since it’s the weekend I may just work on some planning. I need to brainstorm some topic ideas and get them ready for next week.

In the Writer’s Fun category, it’s time to prepare for the August 10K Days. Just visit the Fow Blog and get your RSVP in. These are a ton of fun and you get to ‘visit’ with writers from all over the world. So, if you need some inspiration to plant your butt in the chair and get some writing done–join in the fun!

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

The Problem Isn’t Your Age – The Problem is You!

I’m going to go off on a little tangent today. I may say things that offend people. It’s not my intention to offend anyone, but none the less, people will be offended. It’s not my intention to be rude, but sometimes you need to point things out.

The people who need this the most, which are many of the people on my Facebook friends list, won’t even bother to click and read this. But that’s okay.

It really irks me for people to use age as an excuse. I hate terms like, “at our age.”  What does your age have to do with learning and growing? I personally am at a ‘stage’ in life, not an age.

Your mental capacity did not stop when you graduated high school or college. Your mental capacity does not stop at “our age” or at any age. The only thing that should ever stop your ability to learn, is death. If you aren’t dead, you still have the ability to learn.

However, it does take something that too many people don’t possess, and that’s the will to do so.

*Please note that this post is not relevant to those who are mentally handicapped or suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s or other brain disorders. This post is about perfectly healthy people who have all their mental faculties in tact.

I’m 44 and there’s so many things I still want to learn. I may not get to all of them in my lifetime, but I’m not going to stop because of it. I’m going to learn as much as I possibly can. I like my brain. I’m going to feed it, daily.

Read this excerpt about Jack Lalanne from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_LaLanne

1984 (age 70): handcuffed, shackled, and fighting strong winds and currents, towed 70 rowboats, one with several guests, from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary, 1 mile.

Apparently no one told him he was too damn old, and if they did, he damn sure didn’t listen. Jack died in January of this year (2011) at the age of 93. His family reported that he worked out the day before he died.

Or how about this excerpt: http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/24/jack-lalannes-10-strangest-stunts/

LaLanne’s last public stunt was in 1994, when he celebrated his 80th birthday by getting handcuffed and shackled in order to fight strong winds and currents and swim 1.5 miles while towing 80 boats with 80 people from the Queensway Bay Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary.

My point is not the physical endurance of Jack. He’d been fit all of his life, but his mental ability was still in tact. I bet he never stopped learning.

My other point is that age has very little to do with anything.

Life is not about age, it’s not about a number–it’s about learning and growing, filling your cranial matter.

Stop being a number and start being a sponge for all the things you want to learn. Learn a new language, learn a musical instrument, learn something. You are not too old to learn, you just lack the will to do so. Yes, that can be translated as lazy. Someone has convinced you that you’re too old, that you can’t learn new things, and you’ve believed it. Stop listening to those people. And stop making excuses about your age. It’s not your age—it’s you! And it IS an excuse!

For those of you who still need to use a number, there’s roughly 100 BILLION neurons in your brain. Use them! http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/facts.html

Okay, that’s the end of my rant. I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’m sure you have some of these people in your life too. How do you deal with them?

Pooh-Pooh Heads

How many negative, bubble-busting people have you had in your life? You know the ones, you tell them your great ideas, visions or plans and they somehow bring you down by telling you all the reasons it won’t or can’t work, or they don’t even bother to get excited for you. I call these Pooh-Pooh Heads. I’ve let them bring me down and stop me dead in my tracks because they would convince me of all the reasons my idea was dumb, stupid or just not feasible. And then later I find out that someone else was successful with the same idea. Yeah, I guess it really wasn’t such a good idea huh? I’ve weeded a lot of these people out of my life and will continue to do so.

And Some Days You’re the Porcupine

Yesterday I posed the question of, “Are You a Turtle or an Armadillo?” Last night and this morning I was reminded that sometimes you’re the porcupine.

These guys are really cute…until you rub them the wrong way. Are you rubbing people the wrong way or the one getting rubbed the wrong way? It happens.

This morning I’ve griped at Mr. Kitty, a lot. He’s usually wound up pretty tight, but the past two days it’s gotten on my nerves. Last night, it was not only him, but the birds and everything else. The birds don’t usually annoy me, but lately, Turk is making this new squawking sound and it’s just irritating. I don’t know where he heard that sound either.

This morning (Saturday) I told Kevin that I’m grumpy. Here’s how the conversation went:

Kevin: You know you’re allowed to be grumpy once in awhile…just not on Saturday, I have to be here all day.

Me: Oh, would you like me to reschedule that for Monday then?

It lightened my mood. Sometimes we don’t feel like it’s okay to be grumpy, especially with our spouse and especially when they work outside the home all week and want a nice, quiet weekend at home. But it’s also nice to know that it’s okay if you are grumpy once in awhile. I rarely get grumpy–or I rarely let it show, I should say. And I won’t go into the whole age and woman bit. The fact is I normally practice better control over things that annoy me. But, sometimes I’m a porcupine.

Another reason the conversation lightened my mood is the fact that he used humor (successfully) to put me in a better mood. Humor doesn’t always work, but in this case it did.

The third thing that makes this conversation significant is the fact that he thinks I should vocal about my irritations more often. It just blows his mind that I let so much roll off me. I wasn’t always this way, but one day I decided that something needed to be pretty big and significant for me to give control of myself over to it. It’s a control thing. There’s so much in life we have no control over. The one thing we do have control over is our own self. I refuse (most of the time) to give up control of that—this is where the age and woman thing comes in. Not going there. :)

Most of the time, I’m like this guy:

The duck lets things just roll off his back. He’s calm on the surface but paddling like heck underneath.

Choose your battles. If being the duck, the turtle or the armadillo doesn’t work, some days you have to be the porcupine, whether you want to or not.

Have a great day, no matter which critter you are today, make today count.

~Patti
